How not to do public Wi-Fi
I was in Mount Kisco today, and considering going to the library to take advantage of the Wi-Fi there. A quick look at the library's description of their Wi-Fi service dissuaded me from doing that:
- Only 5 simultaneous users are supported, "so patrons may be asked to limit their time online when others are waiting."
- Outlets are not available "due to tripping hazards for other patrons"!
New horizons in assistive text entry
I'm writing this entry with Dasher, an extremely cool assistive text-entry program. You sort of fly through the alphabet in the direction of the letters you want, kind of like a videogame. And it's predictive (like your phone's SMS entry system, only better): letters that are more probable get bigger areas to fly into, so they're easier to hit. Check it out -- it's a free download, and there's even a Java demo on the website!

Another use of dynamic DNS?
I've been using dynamic DNS in order to be able to connect to my home network easily from elsewhere, as my home network connects to the Internet through a DSL connection with a dynamic IP address, and I want to be able to use the same name to address the network without worrying about the current IP address. This is the usual example of what dynamic DNS is good for, and I'm sure that many of you reading this are doing something similar. But a couple of days ago, a new idea hit me: I'm going to start running a dynamic DNS client (with a different hostname) on my iBook as well. This will mean that wherever I take my iBook, and whatever network I connect to the Internet through, the iBook should still be addressable by the same hostname regardless. I think this is an exciting idea; it may be the first step toward persistent addressing of mobile computers. We'll see how it works out.
