The VirtualBox defaults are outdated - it's been several years since I first encountered a distro which wouldn't install with 1GB of RAM. Intel 64-bit processors implement both the AMD instructions and their own 'Itanium' instructions. I believe the latter are circling the drain in terms of adoption...
